It Gets Better Co-Founder, LGBT Activist & Sex Adviser Dan Savage Gets Glitterbombed by “Tran Activists”
Via Portland Independent Media Center:
Dan Savage is a transphobic and generally oppressive rich white cis gay man who came to Eugene, OR on Halloween weekend. The Dan Savage Welcoming Committee let him know that he can’t be a douche with impunity. On November 1st, 2011, an operative of the Dan Savage Welcoming Committee (DSWM) glitterbombed Dan while he was giving a Q&A at the University of Nike’s Ford Alumni Center in Eugene, Oregon. During this session, the operative leapt to the stage and poured glitter over Dan’s head as they shouted, “Dan Savage is a transphobe!”
As they turned tail, they added, “Glitterbomb courtesy of the Dan Savage Welcoming Committee,” and just before they got out the door, “He’s a racist and misogynist and a rape-apologist, too!” The operative then fled the scene. The DSWC is a memberless organization, and the only point of unity is that we have a problem with Dan Savage for anti-oppressive reasons. We encourage others who share our sentiments to let him know exactly how they feel wherever he goes. He has a huge voice due to his fame; we have to be creative to get heard over the din.
Well, seems like Dan’s ghosts from over 15 years have made him get glittered.
What (not many) people still don’t get from Dan Savage is his sense of humor and his not-so-gentle way of approaching topics around Human Sexuality. Yes, you can find columns of his from 8 years ago and even 2 years ago that any oversensitive trans person could find transphobic. However, he, as everybody else, has evolved on Transgender Issues:
“How do you disprove a charge like you’re transphobic? I’m not afraid of trans people.” Savage then goes into a mimicking voice, knowing not to say, “One of my friends is trans,” but does say that he has a friend who is trans who comes to his house for Christmas. “We hang out all the time,” Savage says. “I certainly have had a journey in the last 20 years—as have we all—on trans issues. When I started writing Savage Love 20 years ago, and you can yank quotes 15, 18 years ago and flat them up today and say, ‘You know, that’s transphobic,’ I’d probably agree with you. 15 years ago I didn’t know as much as I know now—nor did anybody.”
Part of the idea or perception of Dan being a Transphobe, is the kind of language he uses (Tranny, for example). But let’s remember he uses that kind of language with everybody (I mean, he doesn’t call “Tranny” to everybody, but rather he calls Gays “Fags”/”Faggots”, etc). So, is it really wrong someone who’s gay himself to use those words? I don’t really give a fuck. I’m not speaking for everybody but to me is like the “N” word to Blacks. For us queers, should apply the same rule to use those words. If a straighty uses them, I’d cut him/her. But for a gay folk, who happens to be a Gay Activist and Sex Adviser, give the man a break!
And seems to me that those oversensitive folks that glittered Dan, blame him for his fame. Ok, first of all, if anything, he’s used his fame in our favor. He’s made us more visible and he’s used his voice to save sex lives/relationships and thousands of lives.
And Dan a misogynist? That Ain’t. Funny.
A Biphobic? Not really.
A Racist? He’s been attacked for pointing out (the later not so true) issue of Black voters voting yes on Prop. 8 in California. However, just for pointing out the real issue with Black Homophobia (given that most Blacks are Christians in the USA) that doesn’t mean he’s a racist. And he’s never endorse any racist statement/comments on the issue nor any other issue.
A rape-apologist? That’s moronic.
So, to the Dan Savage Welcoming Committee (DSWM), focus on the real threats and not on you’re allies! Fuck off!
RELATED: Queerty rightly points out:
When you flip on the television news, you rarely see any politicians railing against trans people. Though politicians may oppose transgender inclusion in their social policies, few go out of their way to antagonize trans people on TV as publicly as they do LGBs. That’s possibly because trans people form a small social group that conservative politicians would rather ignore than engage at the risk of drawing attention to their own ignorance.
Instead television presents us with the likes of news anchorman Don Lemon flubbing transgender segments with inane questions about genitals and incorrect pronouns, whackadoodle right wingers complaining about how Chaz Bono’s cha-cha will turn children trans, or (at best) an earnest though slanted report on trans children.
As such, the trans community has few well-known targets to attack. By glitterbombing a well-known public figure by Dan Savage, they have ensured that both Savage’s many fans and the LGBT community at large will take note and start discussing Savage’s record as well as larger gender issues beyond his rhetoric.
But doesn’t it seem odd that trans folk would glitterbomb the creator of the “It Gets Better” project, a video project that has helped trans people share their stories and reach out to other trans youth possibly moreso than any digital vehicle in internet history? In many ways, Savage has helped push gay social issues, discriminatory identity politics and positive queer sexuality into the national spotlight by repeatedly pointing out the absurdity of bigoted anti-LGBT arguments as well as the honesty required to live as an ethical slut.
So while it’s obvious that the “Dan Savage Welcoming Committee” chose Dan as a high-profile target to raise larger issues of racism, misogyny, rape-apologists, and transphobia, by doing so they have also targeted arguably one of the most effective LGBT activists within our community. Good works don’t absolve one completely from blame, but certainly trans activists don’t disapprove of what good work Savage has done.
We’re all gonna be waiting for Dan’s statement and specially, this Savage U’s episode.
