Russia: Homophobic Lawmaker Vitaly Milonov Targets Pro-Gay Artists With Visa Investigation

Toweroad reports:

Anti-gay lawmaker Vitaly Milonov appears to be sending a message to performing artists coming to Russia: speak out in favor of gay rights and be investigated. Milonov appears to have triggered an investigation into visits to the country by Lady Gaga and Madonna, both of whom made spectacles of Russia’s anti-gay laws during their performances.

The Guardian reports:
The office of Russia’s prosecutor general has issued a statement confirming that neither singer obtained an appropriate visa prior to performing there last year. Madonna, who played in August 2012, and Gaga, who appeared in December, travelled under cultural-exchange visas. These documents “do not grant their bearers the right to engage in any commercial activity,” authorities said. According to the Russian legal information agency, prosecutors are now considering asking Russia’s foreign ministry or federal migration service to press charges.
As any foreigner who has visited Moscow will know, Russian immigration can be extremely complicated. But Gaga and Madonna’s mistakes weren’t just discovered by accident: prosecutors launched their investigation only after being contacted by one of the singers’ most outspoken enemies. The man in question was Vitaly Milonov, who serves in St Petersburg’s municipal legislature and authored St Petersburg’s law banning gay “propaganda” – a model for recent legislation passed by the Duma.

Russia: Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev Sees No Need In Regulating Homosexuality
The Moscow New reports:

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at a press conference Friday that he sees no reason to limit homosexuality by law.“Not every moral issue, behavioral habit or communication issue between people should be regulated. This is why not all relationships between people are subject to a legal interpretation,” Medvedev said in response to a question on banning homosexuality. The prime minister said that there was too much fuss about the issue and that in Russia the issue concerns few people.“Probably this issue does not concern too many people in the country, and it’s not discussed at all levels,” Medvedev said.At the same time he admitted that State Duma lawmakers have the right to submit any proposals or bills to the parliament.Medvedev’s statements come at the end of a year that has seen its share of controversy with regard to laws involving homosexuality in Russia.A law imposing fines for “gay propaganda” took effect in St. Petersburg on March 30.It has faced heavy criticism from the LGBT community and rights activists in Russia and abroad, but it has also been proposed that it should be made into a federal law. Any citizen who breaks the law in St. Petersburg may be subject to pay a fine for an administrative violation.Claiming that Madonna violated the law during her St. Petersburg concert over the summer, nine plaintiffs sought upwards of $10 million in compensation for “moral damages.”During the concert, the star handed out pink bracelets to the crowd in a show of solidarity with the city’s gay and lesbian community. But the Russian court ruled US pop star Madonna did not break the law on the promotion of homosexual lifestyles among minors during her concert in St. Petersburg earlier this year.Russia’s lower house may begin talks of a bill stipulating fines of up to 500,000 rubles ($16,220) for promoting homosexuality among minors on December 19.

And Lady Gaga thanks him, on behalf of all of us.

Indonesia: Security Concerns Prompt Lady Gaga To Cancel Jakarta Concert
CNN reports:

Lady Gaga has canceled her concert in Indonesia, her management said Sunday, citing security concerns after Islamic hardliners denounced her costumes and dance moves as too risqué.
If the concert were held, there would be concerns the singer, her crew and attendees may be in harm’s way, said Minola Sebayang, the lawyer for the promoters.
"This is an advice from her security team. So the cancellation is purely based on the decision made by her management," Sebayang said.
Earlier this month, Jakarta police recommended that Lady Gaga’s sold-out June 3 show not be issued a permit because of security concerns.

The pop diva appeared to acknowledge the incident in a post on Twitter on Saturday:

There is nothing Holy about hatred.
— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) May 26, 2012

On Sunday, she tweeted confirmation of the cancelation: “We had to cancel the concert in Indonesia. I’m so very sorry and the fans & just as devastated as you if not more. You are everything to me,” she wrote.

"I will try to put together something special for you. My love for Indonesia has only grown," the performer said.

Islamists and conservative Muslims have decried Lady Gaga’s upcoming concert, saying her revealing costumes and sensual dance moves are forbidden by Islamic law.

The chairman of the Islamic Defenders Front, Habib Rizieq, said his group could not guarantee security if the concert were held.

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world.

In March, the pop star got a thumbs-down by the country’s highest Islamic authority, according to The Jakarta Globe.

Indonesian Council of Ulema chairman Cholil Ridwan was urging Muslims not to attend the controversial singer’s upcoming concert in Jakarta, the newspaper reported.

"(The concert is) intended to destroy the nation’s morality," Ridwan told the Globe.

Ridwan is concerned that the singer’s revealing outfits and sexy dance moves will set a bad example for Muslim youths.

Newspaper reports said more than 25,000 tickets were sold in the first two hours after the concert went on sale in March. Police said the promoter should not have started selling tickets before getting a permit.

This is not the first controversy surrounding the singer’s “Born This Way” tour. Gaga also ran afoul of Christian groups in South Korea, prompting the government to ban people under the age of 18 from attending her show.

Last week, Christian groups in the Philippines protested Lady Gaga’s performances there Monday and Tuesday.

About Madonna’s take on Lady Gaga & what happened backstage after Madonna’s win, the US Magazine reports:

Last week, Madonna gave several interviews in the press accusing her pop queen successor Lady Gaga of ripping off her classic “Express Yourself” in “Born This Way,” calling the latter track “reductive.”

But, backstage at the Globes, Madonna was hopeful that her win wouldn’t irk John, 64. “I hope he speaks to me for the next couple of years,” she quipped. “He’s been known to get mad at me so I don’t know. He’s brilliant and I adore him so he’ll win another award. I don’t feel bad!”

Lady Gaga Will Drop The Ball In NYC For NYE

Joe.My.God. reports:

Native New Yorker Lady Gaga will join Mayor Bloomberg in dropping the ball tomorrow night in Times Square.

Each year, Hizzoner chooses a guest to help drop the ball and count down the year’s final minute. Past choices have included Bill and Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Muhammad Ali and Rudy Giuliani. Lady Gaga will perform on ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2012.”
This is my eleventh year as a New Yorker and I’ve yet to be in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, as I’m regularly told I would permanently destroy any local cred should I do so.

Lady Gaga, Frontwoman For Queen?

Joe.My.God. reports:

Queen’s short list for a new lead singer includes Lady Gaga.

Could Gaga go from a lady to a Queen? Guitarist Brian May has said that among the singers Queen’s considered to front the band, Lady Gaga is a top contender. “We get a lot of offers to work with other people,” May told Express. “I worked with Lady Gaga and she’s very creative and is someone we’ve talked about singing, fronting the band with. She’s not just a singer, she writes her own material.”And apparently Gaga is into the idea, as May noted that she confirmed “she would like to do something with us.”
The above-linked TIME Magazine writer doesn’t find the idea “that far-fetched.”
