Harvard Athletes Show LGBT Support

In honor of National Coming Out Day Tuesday, Harvard varsity wrestling team members swapped their usual uniforms for gay pride tees and rainbow pins. 

The wrestlers were first introduced to the idea of sporting pro-LGBTQ attire before an afternoon practice by nonresident tutor and friend Robert Joseph “R.J.” Jenkins. After Jenkins, who is gay, brought up the idea one day in conversation with several athletes, the team members decided to show their support as allies of LGBT people.

“Sometimes it’s difficult to be very vocal as an ally,” said Harvard College Queer Students and Allies copresident Emma Wang, “We want them to feel included because they play such an important role.”

UFC Wrestler Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: No Grappling With Gays

The Advocate reports:

Mixed martial arts champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira of Brazil (Pictured, left) says he would rather not train with gay fighters, USA Today  reports.

The newspaper quoted an English translation of an article originally published in Portuguese, with Nogueira saying, “I have no prejudice against the gays, but I wouldn’t train with someone who’s gay. I have no malice, I don’t take our physical contact as [something] sexual. But what if the gay person has that malice of having physical contact with me, of staying there grappling? I would have no problems having a gay student in my academy, but I would rather not train with him.”

Nogueira is a winner of winner of heavyweight titles in Pride Fighting Championships and the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He will fight Brendan Schaub this week in a UFC match in Rio de Janeiro after having been out of action since February 2010 due to injuries.

Four Wrestlers Bully Their Teammate With Brand New Secret Weapon: Their Dicks

Four members of Wisconsin’s Lincoln High School state championship wrestling team got charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct this week for allegedly sexually harassing a 15-year-old teammate by repeatedly trying to touch him with their dicks. Oddly, they’re probably straight.

• A 15-year-old boy told cops about his Lincoln High School teammates “dancing around him while they are naked, swinging their penises at him,” according to a criminal complaint based on an investigation by Wisconsin Rapids Police Department officers.
• The freshman wrestler told cops that he was harassed “about five to ten times” during the season, and that “during some of those occasions he was hit by each of their penises on his leg.” Additionally, he told of one incident in the shower when a teammate “placed his penis on [victim’s] butt.” The boy added that he “could not get away because he was boxed in by two other wrestlers.”
• On another occasion, the victim said that he “had to climb into a locker” to prevent being hit in the face by the penis of another wrestler.

A lot of people don’t know that most incidents of male-on-male sexual harassment actually occur because of a straight guys who want to intimidate and belittle their peers. Their aggressive “penis tag” sounds curiously like last year’s “ball tapping” game—such games are all about humiliation, not sex.

Straight Wrestler Hudson Taylor Launches Site Against Homophobia In Sports

Champion collegiate wrestler Hudson Taylor, who is straight, has launched Athlete Ally, a website where players, coaches, fans, and parents can take a pledge to end homophobia in sports. Taylor generated controversy at the University of Maryland when he competed with a Human Rights Campaign sticker on his wrestling headgear. Today he is a coach at Columbia University.

Turkish Oil Wrestling Makes UNESCO List

Turkish oil wrestling, the national sport in which men douse their bodies in olive oil and attempt to put their hands through their opponents’ hand-stitched lederhosen, has won a place on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural treasures.According to Al Jazeera, the United Nations agency deemed the tradition, as practiced in the almost 650-year-old Kirkpinar festival, worthy of preservation, along with other obscure and better-known arts and rituals like Beijing Opera, Spanish flamenco, and French gastronomy.Also nominated were an annual hopping procession in eastern Luxembourg and a scissor-dancing ritual in Peru’s Chanka region.
