Barbra Streisand: Tell Me A Story
The Advocate reports:
Trailblazing superstar Barbra Streisand was feted at a star-studded gala last night and encouraged other women to create material and tell stories.
Streisand was among nine top Hollywood female stars who were honored at Ellemagazine’s 18th Annual Women in Hollywood Tribute in Beverly Hills. Jennifer Aniston, Freida Pinto, Evan Rachel Wood, Naomi Watts, Michelle Pfeiffer, Viola Davis, Dreamworks chief Stacey Snider, and newcomer Elizabeth Olsen were the other honorees, but much of the attention was focused on a rare public appearance by Streisand, who picked up the L’Oreal Paris Legend award.
Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow, who was presented the best director Oscar for 2009’s The Hurt Locker by Streisand, called her “a world icon” and “somebody who has mastered virtually every art form imaginable: directing, acting, composing, singing, producing, writing,” when she introduced her on stage.
Slumdog Millionaire’s Pinto said she was honored to be “sharing the same oxygen” with Streisand. “You’re a legend not only in Hollywood but literally all over the world,” Pinto said to Streisand. “I can say that because I come from India.”
During her acceptance speech, Streisand spoke about the dearth of female filmmakers, saying, “Let’s be bold and don’t wait for the phone to ring. Create your own material. Tell me a story.”
Tipped by Javier O. (@KyoHMA) and Richard K. (@callmericardo). Not saying that this was pushed down my throat (no pun intended) and nor I was forced to post this cause at the end of the day, blonde Scandanavian muscle men with big hammers (as Richard wisely put it) it ain’t something I’m against of. Chris Hemsworth is quite fit for the role, I’d say. I usually love Natalie Portman’s performances, so this seems promising. Though I must say that by watching Clark Gregg on the trailer I can’t stop expecting to see Julia Louis-Dreyfus at any moment in the film. Not that long ago I watched “A Perfect Getaway”, and since then I haven’t been able to take my mind off of Chris (without knowing about his upcoming film), so though our interests are, I’d dare to say, a little different, like my friend Javier, I can’t wait to watch it. I’d be posting more about movies. I’ll try to give a better balance to the topics I say this blog is about. I’m open to suggestions as well.Thor - Trailer
So The Hangover 2’s Trailer Offended The MPAA, But Not The Dilemma’s?
I wanna watch this so badly. But apparently, the MPAA has an issue with this.
Queerty reports:
Warner Bros. yanked its trailer for The Hangover 2 from theaters because the fourth graders at the Motion Picture Association Of America, which holds sway over the ratings of all trailers and films, got pissed. And no, not because Bradley Cooper’s character is paging another Dr. Faggot, but because it was too raunchy.
(A trailer for the movie, which is rated R, appeared before screenings of the PG-13 The Source Code; the MPAA didn’t give permission.)
So what was the problem? A scene where the monkey puts its mouth on the man’s fake erection? Whatever.
Just note that while the MPAA has a problem with trailers that adult men doing stupid things while drunk, it does not have a problem with trailers for PG-13 films where sober adult men make “that’s so gay” jokes. (The Dilemma’s revised trailer, sans “so gay” line, was put out not because of the MPAA’s involvement, but from the negative publicity.)
Elizabeth Taylor Dies At Age 79
The Huffington Post reports:
Legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor has died at age 79.
The passing was first reported ABC’s Good Morning America. In a tweet sent out at 9 am on Wednesday, the show wrote: “Breaking: Elizabeth Taylor has died, @GMA confirms.”
Taylor had been hospitalized in February for congestive heart failure, a condition she learned she had in 2004. A two time Oscar winner (for “Butterfield 8” in 1960 and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” in 1966), Taylor was also known for her eight high profile marriages.
In mid-March, her publicist, Sally Morrison, said she was in stable condition at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Taylor’s son, Michael Wilding, released a statement on the passing:
“My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world. Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman, and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished. We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”
Joe.My.God. reports:
Details are sketchy, but it’s being reported that Elizabeth Taylor died of congestive heart failure this morning in Los Angeles. She was 79. Gay men will perhaps most fondly recall Taylor for her early and relentless work as an HIV/AIDS activist.
